During live broadcasting, there are two key teams that runs the show, control room team and production team. The control room team gives information and direction to the production team, they also have the overall vision, control and programming of the show. All job roles in both teams are behind cameras, which the exception to Talents.

Control Room Team

Executive Producer

The Executive Producer (EP) of the show is normally the creator of the show, or someone who has the most experience in putting together all parts of the show. The EP would work with the producer to give him or her the overall vision and details of the show. The EP should act has an advisor/mentor to the producer, by giving feedback, or working together on the rundown. Ultimately, during the show the producer will make all decisions, and the EP must be available to give advice. It is both important and beneficial that the EP has a wide network of people outside the station to help support the show where necessary. There can be more than one EP in each show, but it would be unnecessary at Guild TV.

Producer/Director

The roles of the producer and director are merged at Guild TV. In full broadcast studios, the producer is responsible in keeping the show within a given timeframe, i.e. 60 minutes, 90 minutes etc. He or she can introduce or remove sections of the broadcast. The producer have the ultimate say in how the show is ran, even the owner of the studio, executives or senior managers cannot overrule the producers decision when the show is live. Therefore the producer has the FINAL say in any given situation during the show.

The director controls the artistic aspect of the show, whilst giving the technical team the requirements. He or she is responsible for ensuring the rundown is followed, segments/transitions/astons/graphics/VTs are called, whilst giving the presenters the necessary direction, i.e. “What comes next?”. A number of rehearsals with the producer, EP, production team should have been carried out prior to the show going live, therefore the talents should know what’s on the rundown.

At Guild TV, this merged role is still called: Producer. As Guild TV is not required to run within a restricted time schedule, therefore the two roles can be merged as one.

Graphics Producer

The Graphics Producer at Guild TV creates and outputs all astons/graphics/transitions to go live. He or She is an operator, listening to the director’s calls, and upon an item being called, he or she would cue the transition/aston/graphic. At times, the Graphics Producer may also output audio as well. All astons/graphics should be prepared by the “Broadcast Designer” prior to broadcast where possible.

Broadcast Designer

The Broadcast Designer creates motion graphics for the live show. The graphics can be prepared in any 3D animation software such as 3DS Max, Cinema 4D; and then composited together in program such as After Effects. Space should then be left for the Graphics Producer to fill with text or other objects, for instance name or location of on screen talent, results of a sports match etc.

VT Operator

The VT Operator is responsible to output all VTs to go live. He or She is an operator, listening to the director’s calls, and upon a VT being called, he or she would cue the video. The production team prior to the broadcast should prepare all VTs, with the exception to a review/credits VT.

Sound Engineer

The sound engineer is responsible to ensure the correct sound level (volume) is broadcasting. He or she is also required to liaise with the producer to manage, which audio channels are to remain active during different segments of the broadcast.

Vision Mixer

The vision mixer is responsible for the actual switching between different video sources, such as camera shots, VTs etc.

Master Control Operators

The Master Control Operator is responsible to ensure continuous operation of the transmission, monitoring the technical quality and accuracy of the broadcast (not the content). He or she would also troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and preparing programming our website for broadcast.

Technical Director

The technical director is responsible to supervise all the other crewmembers working in the control room. He or she responsible for the proper working of all the equipment and looks into any technical problem which arises before, during or after the broadcast of a project.
